History of Waynesboro
Waynesboro, Virginia is an old town and has been inhabited in some form since the 1700’s. In 1798 the first down town plots were sold. Buildings from this era remain downtown today , one of which is the Plumb House. It functions currently as a museum and is open for tours seasonally. Waynesboro remained a small remote town through most of the 1800’s. On March, 2 1895 the town was the site of the Battle of Waynesboro, which lasted only 20 minutes, but dealt a significant blow to the defeated confederate army.
Throughout most of the 20th century local industry employed large numbers of Waynesboro’s residences. Spandex was invented in Waynesboro at the DuPont plan, which still operates under different ownership. The textile plant Wayn-Text, now owned by Mohawk Industries, has been cranking out quality product for decades.
Waynesboro Attractions
Three miles to the east of Waynesboro, Skyline Drive snakes its way north, upon the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains through the Shenandoah National Park. The same road heading south is known as the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is also a national park. Both are very scenic and offer extensive recreational opportunities.
Historic Downtown Waynesboro is a classic main street community. The pedestrian friendly environment and assortment of businesses make it an attractive place to shop and enjoy the city.
