Harrisonburg Virginia – A Great Place to Live

Located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, Harrisonburg is a college town with two excellent colleges, James Madison University and the Eastern Mennonite University. Harrisonburg has a small town feel but still has a ton to do. Many of the students who attend college here never leave, deciding to make Harrisonburg their home. The unemployment rate is lower here then the country average (Harrisonburg 3.3% – US average 4.8%) and offers great job opportunities with companies such as Merck Pharmaceuticals, JMU and Sentara RMH Medical Center located here.The Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains are it’s nearest neighbors and there are plenty of outdoor activities which makes this area a hit with outdoor sports enthusiasts. Harrisonburg restaurants have something for everyone. The area also has a lot of activities such as craft breweries, music, art and historic sites. White Oak Lavender and The Purple Wolf Vineyard 

Relax and enjoy the beauty at the White Oak Lavender and The Purple Wolf Vineyard. When in season, you can spend the day picking your own Lavender. After a day in the field picking flowers head over to their shop to enjoy their famous gourmet Blueberry Lavender ice cream. You can also pick up Lavender supplies such as essential oils, bath and body products and accessories and gifts. Spend some time in their tasting room and sample their Purple Wolf Wine. The tasting room is open 7 days a week from 10AM to 6PM. The farm is open Monday – Thursday from 10AM to 5PM and Friday – Sunday from 10AM to 6PM. 

Mineral Museum 

Explore this amazing museum located on the James Madison University Campus and learn about the 600 varieties of gemstones that reside in the museum’s inventory. The gem stones come from all over the world and the museum shares the story of the stone’s history, how crystallization took place and the market value of each gem. The museum is open Tuesdays and Thursdays 11AM to 3PM and admission is free. 

Edith J. Carrier Arboretum 

This beautiful botanical garden is a wonderful woodland sanctuary located on the grounds of James Madison University. Explore the Arboretum grounds and walk their trails every day from dawn until dusk. It is free and open to the public. Enjoy their many educational programs at the Francis Plecker Educational Center which is open Monday – Friday 8AM to 4PM.

Explore More Discovery Museum

Plan for adventure and take a trip to the Explore More Discovery Museum. This museum’s goal is to engage young minds through multi sensory educational experiences. They have a range of exhibits including a play kitchen, theatre, craft areas and a makerspace for youth ages 9 and up. The museum is now open by reservation only and costs $8 per person. Children under 1 year of age – free.

The large single family homes located in this neighborhood are perfect for those who crave a quiet suburban lifestyle. The neighborhood is well established and is located in the Southern part of Harrisonburg in close proximity to the Spotswood Country Club. 

Greendale

Harmony Heights 

Located near Eastern Mennonite University, this newer neighborhood has a variety of house styles. The neighborhood has a lake and a quieter feel and more relaxed pace. 

Old Town

Located near James Madison University and downtown Harrisonburg, this historic district is in the center of it all. This is a great place to live for those who enjoy living within walking distance to restaurants, breweries and shopping. 

Pleasant Hill 

This family friendly neighborhood is closed to outside traffic. The homes here are single family houses from the 1950s and 1960s in a variety of styles. The neighborhood is located close to James Madison University and downtown Harrisonburg.
