Biggest Design Trends for 2022

It is the end of the year and our minds are gravitating to thoughts of new beginnings, healthier habits and a fresh outlook. One way to incorporate all of these things is by freshening up our home decor. Below I will review 5 trends that will be popular in 2022.

Vintage

Vintage items are once again becoming a popular home decor choice. Covid has affected the supply chain for many new items and whether redecorating or renovating your home you may not be able to get the items that you desire. This is where vintage comes in. Vintage items are a great option that infuses your home with character and personality. One vintage look that is particularly popular right now is the 70s retro look. Whether you choose to reupholster a 70s throwback couch or chair or you color your home with popular 70s colors such as burnt orange, moss greens or other warm neutrals, your home will feel fresh at the same time feeling comfortably familiar.

Curves

The past year has encouraged us all to lean into slow living. One of the ways we are changing our decor to meet our mindset is to soften the sharp corners of previous years furniture options. In today’s environment of self care and more time spent in our homes, we have taken a softer, more romantic approach to our furniture and our surroundings so that our rooms bring us a feeling of comfort. Soft curvy headboards, couches, chairs and home bars help soften the look of the room and bring a more cozy, comforting and relaxing feel to our space.

Multifunctional spaces/smaller spaces

Single use items have gradually been losing favor as people become more concerned with the environment and now this trend is moving into our homes. We are no longer looking for pieces and spaces that serve only one purpose. We are looking for smarter, harder working items such as desks that become tables, couches that become beds. These multi-use items allow our homes to provide us with everything we need without increasing our home’s footprint. There has also been a trend towards smaller rooms rather than open floor plans as multiple generations are living in the same home space. These smaller rooms allow us a place where we can find a much needed moment alone.

Natural Materials

Home design has begun to shift to more responsibly sourced and longer lasting furnishings for our homes. This includes the trend of vintage but also for our new furniture items that we are bringing in our homes we want natural and sustainable well made products. With this shift we are looking for items that are made with real woods, natural fibers and that are created by artisans rather than factories.

 Bringing the outside in

The biophilic design trend continues with homeowners becoming increasingly aware of how their homes look and feel affect their well being. Home owners continue to desire the simple and calming environments that can only be created by bringing the outdoors in. Natural decor items such as dried flowers and grasses, natural materials such as wood and natural fibers, nature inspired colors such as shades of green are a great way to bring nature inside. While these decor options can give you the feeling of nature in your home, there is also a shift to larger and more windows that allow in natural light and allow  amazing views of the outdoors decreasing the feeling of separation between the outside and inside.

As we move into this next year and continue to do some deep soul searching to discover how we want our life to look – take a look around your home. Is your home a place that you are happy to return to each day for rest and relaxation after a long day? Perhaps you work from home. Does your home fulfill all of your needs yet still feels comforting and cozy? If not…which design trend will you try to make your home a sanctuary?
