About Church Hill Neighborhood

When most people think of Richmond, Virginia, they think of the state capital with its abundance of historical landmarks. Richmond, Virginia’s Church Hill neighborhood is one of the city’s most historic and vibrant communities. Located just east of downtown, Church Hill is home to a diverse array of businesses, restaurants, and cultural attractions.

The neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, East Broad Street, is lined with beautiful historic homes and buildings, many of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. One of Church Hill’s most notable landmarks is St. John’s Episcopal Church, which was founded in 1741. The church is best known as the site of Patrick Henry’s famous “Give me liberty or give me death” speech, which was delivered in 1775. Today, St. John’s is still an active Episcopal church, and its congregation is very involved in the life of the neighborhood. Another Church Hill landmark is the Virginia State Capitol, which is located on East Broad Street. The Capitol building was designed by Thomas Jefferson, and it has been the seat of Virginia’s state government since 1788. The Capitol is open to the public for tours, and it is also the site of many special events throughout the year, like Hog on the Hill and The Irish Festival.

If you’re looking for a bite to eat in Church Hill, you’ll have no shortage of options. The neighborhood is home to many excellent restaurants, including fine dining at The Roosevelt, some of the best burgers in town at Cobra Burger, James Beard nominated pastries at Sub Rosa, and delicious modern German cuisine at Metzger. There are also several great bars and taverns in the area, like Patrick Henry’s, perfect for grabbing a drink after a long day and meeting some of the neighborhood regulars.

If you are in the mood for some shopping, the shops and boutiques in Church Hill have some of the most unique finds in Richmond. While in Church Hill, the parks are a must see for the views. Both Chimborazo Park and Libby Hill Park have gorgeous views overlooking the James River. Regularly, throughout the year, these parks hold events that are great for a fun day with family and friends. Jefferson Park, on the west side of Church Hill is a family friendly park with a playground, a walking trail, and a great outdoor place to get a workout in with free to use body weight equipment.

Another draw to Church Hill is it’s proximity to some of the best beer in the city. Stone Brewing’s east coast location is right down the road. Their brewery offers all of the classic, well-known Stone beers as well as unique beers and collaborations just at this location. Stop by and get a tour of their impressive brewery setup or stop by for their pop-up markets or dog centered events. A quick hop, skip, and jump from stone is one of Richmond’s most loved original breweries, Triple Crossing. Not only do they have an impressive beer selection but they have teamed up with Billy Bread and created an amazing menu of Neapolitan pizzas and wings that will leave you licking your fingers clean.
