History of Richmond VA

In 1606, King James I of England granted a royal charter to the Virginia Company of London, a group of merchants interested in profiting from mining and trade, to settle British colonists in North America. The first permanent Richmond settlement was made in 1637, at the head of the James River. Soon afterward, Fort Charles was built in 1645, and the site became a major trading center.

Under the benefaction of William Byrd, Richmond was developed and built in 1737 and became the capital of Virginia in 1779. Virginia joined the Confederacy in 1861, and during the Civil War Richmond served as the capital of the Confederacy and suffered the constant focus of Union armed forces.

Richmond persevered through numerous trials, including the 1862 Peninsular campaign, in which the city was narrowly saved by the Seven Days battles, and the Wilderness campaign of 1864. Grant’s ensuing campaign of around Petersburg (1864-1865) led to Richmond’s eventual demise, and much of the city was destroyed during the subsequent Confederate evacuation.
