Wintergreen & Nelson County Information and Resources

The Area’s Premiere Resort and Recreation Area

Bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the James River to the east, Nelson County is the ideal location for nature enthusiasts and outdoorsmen.

Within a short drive of both Charlottesville and Lynchburg, Nelson is a convenient location for commuters looking to settle in a relaxed and beautiful community without losing the urban resources on which they have come to rely.

As a large portion of the county is in the governmentally-protected George Washington National Forest, Nelson County is the perfect location for hikers and those looking for an escape from the hurriedness of city life.

The county contains sections of the Tye, Piney, Buffalo, Rockfish, and James Rivers, and boasts some of the finest canoeing and fishing in the state. Nelson is largely unscathed countryside, and the county produces much of Virginia’s apples and fine wines at its award-winning orchards and vineyards.

Widely recognized as the childhood home of Earl Hamner, Jr., whose experiences provided the basis for The Waltons, the area also contains Walton’s Mountain Museum.

Aside from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail, Nelson County has a significant recreational asset in Wintergreen Resort.

This “Mountain Top” resort offers recreational amenities all four seasons, from championship golf to award-winning tennis and Virginia’s best skiing and snowboarding.

Wintergreen is unique in that it is the only East Coast resort to have all its terrain covered by a state-of-the-art, automated snowmaking system.

Because of its range in elevation in the Blue Ridge Mountains, golfing is available all year: Wintergreen’s Devil’s Knob course typically doesn’t rise above 80 degrees when Charlottesville is at the height of summer at 100 degrees, and during the winter, skiers can enjoy natural snow while golfers at the Stoney Creek course enjoy temperatures in the 50s.

There is no question why Wintergreen draws over a half million visitors annually, with its majestic natural views, scenic hiking trails, golf courses, and ski slopes; luxury homes and mountain properties in the area make Wintergreen the perfect location for a primary or secondary home.
