The origins of Henrico date back to some of the first settlements in the New World. In 1611, Thomas Dale first founded the ‘Citie of Henricus’ in present-day Farrar’s Island to honor Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales. While the early colony was destroyed during violence with local Powhatan tribes in 1622, the history didn’t end there – Henrico Shire was later formed around its present-day area in 1634, making it one of the eight original Shires of Virginia established in the Crown’s new colony. And although the territory has changed quite a bit in the last few centuries, Henrico today remains one of the oldest continuous settlements in the country – a living testament to American history.

Henrico Real Estate

These days, Henrico continues to be home to a thriving local community and an excellent place to settle down. With a population of just over 300,000, Henrico is the fifth-largest county in the state – a number that has grown consistently since the 1920s. That comes as no surprise, given the county’s low cost of living (~85% of the national average), access to transportation (hosting both Amtrak lines and the Richmond International Airport) and strong economy. In fact, Henrico is nationally known for its excellent fiscal responsibility – to this day, it remains one of the only counties in the country with the highest bond rating (Triple, triple-A) from all three national bond-rating agencies.

Thanks to all these factors, Henrico real estate offers an incredible value for the price – all on top of being a great place to live. As the home of “America’s Premier Short Track,” living in Henrico is a dream for any NASCAR fans – and thanks to its close proximity to Richmond and easy access to the rest of the mid-Atlantic, it’s the perfect location for anyone interested in major cultural institutions without the hassle of living right in the city. For those seeking a solid middle ground between rural and urban life – as well as easy access to both – Henrico real estate is unparalleled.
