History of Richmond
Richmond offers a unique connection between modernity and our country’s proud history. From the time of America’s independence, Richmond has played an important role. In 1775, it was from the city’s oldest church, St. John’s, that Patrick Henry delivered his unforgettable line, “Give me liberty or give me death!”
In 1780, Richmond was chosen to replace Williamsburg as Virginia’s capital. From this point forward, significant funding has been pumped into financing area transportation improvements.
Richmond is also home to the historic Tredegar Iron Works. The iron foundry’s significance to the Southern cause as the one manufacturing stronghold was influential in the decision to move the capital of the Confederacy from Montgomery to Richmond in 1861.
Today, Richmond’s charming historic neighborhoods and celebrated historical landmarks emphasize the area’s unique heritage.
