Virginia Wineworks
Visitors to Virginia Wineworks quickly see the passion the winery has for making wine. Nestled in the woods just south of Charlottesville, Wineworks produces wine under two labels, the Virginia Wineworks label and the Michael Shaps label.
Under the Virginia Wineworks label, the winery demonstrates its understanding of the desire for high quality yet value-oriented wines. These lower priced wines are the only bag-in-box wines produced in Virginia. Under the Michael Shaps label, Wineworks handcrafts high quality, small lot wines easily appreciated by wine connoisseurs.
Virginia Wineworks and Michael Shaps won three gold medals at the 2013 Virginia Governor’s Cup Competition. This was the most gold medals awarded to any single winery. The winning wines were Michael Shaps 2010 Chardonnay, 2010 Cabernet Franc, and 2008 Red Hill Reserve Cabernet Franc. Michael Shaps also won four silver medals at the competition.
The wines produced under his label include Viognier, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Meritage. The value wines produced under the Virginia Wineworks label include Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Rosé. These wines are packaged with the bag-and-box method in order to be as cost efficient as possible.
When visitors come to Virginia Wineworks for a wine tasting, they pass through the production facilities on the way to the tasting tour. In this way, guests are able to see behind the scenes of the wine they are about to try, and catch a more intimate glimpse of the winemaking process than is available at other wineries.
Visitors also get a behind the scenes look at how the wine is made when they utilize Wineworks custom winemaking service. With this service, individuals, vineyards, and wineries can use the knowledge and facilities of Virginia Wineworks to produce wine for their own brand. Those who use this service are able to be as active in the process as they want, or they are welcome to let the experts at Virginia Wineworks take over for them.
