The Ideal Environment For WineVineyards and wineries in Virginia have become an economic engine and have come a long way since the efforts that took place at Jefferson’s beloved Monticello in the 1770’s. Award-winning Virginia Wines Garner National and International Acclaim

Virginia wines continue to impress critics across the country and around the world:

  • Thirteen Virginia wines have won awards at the prestigious San Diego National Wine Competition, including Best of Show and two Best of Class.
  • Virginia wines won 12 categories of the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
  • Virginia is the seventh largest wine producing state based on bottled wine volume and acreage of planted now-famous VA vineyards.
  • Virginia is ranked fifth behind California, New York, Oregon, and Washington based on the number of wineries in each state.

The biggest competition of American wines, the SFCW Competition hosts wines from 31 states and countries, showcasing foreign wines from New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Germany, and France.

This year, Virginia wines competed against more than 4,700 domestic and international wines in more than 70 wine categories, which showcase the significance of this year’s winning results.

Virginia Wine: A History of More than 400 Years

Grape growing in Virginia began when the first Jamestown settlers planted European vines on what is now Commonwealth soil. Sadly, new-world insects and diseases hindered significant wine production in Virginia down for more than three centuries.

Thomas Jefferson is regarded as the father of Virginia wines. The third U.S. President established his own Virginia vineyard at Monticello, his home in central Virginia. Although his wine growing was relatively unsuccessful, his legacy lives on today as the Monticello wine region accounts for 21 Virginia wineries of the 140 VA vineyards on the Virginia Wine Trail. The other 119 VA wineries are situated in eight other wine regions throughout the Commonwealth.

Today, Virginia wines have finally taken a major share of the US wine industry. Virginia may be well behind California and New York in recognition and wine production, but Virginia ranks as the seventh largest wine producing state in terms of bottled wine volume and acres of planted vineyards.

Virginia Wine Trails, Virginia Wineries for Sale, Vineyard for Sale

Virginia wine trails permit connoisseurs and amateurs to enjoy Virginia wines throughout the Commonwealth as you take in the beautiful countryside VA winery to VA winery, the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay. Wine is now such an integral part of Virginia’s tourism and the economy that the month of October has been designated as Virginia Wine Month.

VA wine trails take you along scenic bucolic routes, past towns rich in history which proves to be a delightful and educational way to explore the Virginia wine region. Most wineries in Virginia host special seasonal wine events and normal visiting and tasting hours.

Virginia winery events are an excellent way to complement VA wine trail pursuits. Tasting, pairings, hot air balloon rides, and festivals with grape stomping events will give you the full flavor of Virginia wine country.
