History of Burke, Virginia
Silas Burke was a 19th century farmer, politician and merchant. He built his house on a hill overlooking the valley, and when the time came, he donated land to the railroad company to build a station at the base of the hill. The station was subsequently named Burke Station in his honor.
A post office was also built at Burke’s Station, and in 1903, when a man named Henry Copperthite bought the Burke house, he shortened the name, Burke’s Station, to Burke. Henry, nicknamed “King of Pie,” was the largest nongovernmental employer in Washington, DC. As his nickname indicates, his factory turned out more than 50,000 pies a day.
In turn, he invested this money back into the town of Burke, building four hotels, stables, and expanding the general store. Mr. Copperthite also built a racetrack, which transformed Burke into a major social hub. People traveled from different regions of the Commonwealth to visit the special community that had become Burke.
By the middle of the twentieth century, employees of the federal government began to live in Burke and commute by train to Washington. Soon afterwards, the first subdivision was built, Kings Park, and over the course of the next few decades, Burke was transformed into a heavily populated suburban community.
