History

The history of Annandale dates back to pre-Revolutionary War times. In 1685, a gentleman named William H. Fitzhugh purchased 24,000 acres of land. Subsequently, the property became one of the largest tobacco plantations in the region. Known as “Ravensworth,” Fitzhugh’s descendants eventually sectioned the land and sold the parcels.

The first businessman in Annandale was William Garges. In the early 1800’s, he established a blacksmith shop and livery stable. In addition, he became the first postmaster. In 1846, Mr. Garges donated land to erect the first church, the Annandale Methodist Chapel.

During the War Between the States, Union troops slept on the church grounds and burned it down on their way out. After the war, another church was built nearby and still stands at the junction of Colombia Pike and Gallows Road.

Parks and Outdoor Recreation

Recreational activities abound in Annandale. Bisected by the Accotink Creek, one can find the Fairfax CCT, or Cross Country Trail, which provides 20 miles of hiking, running, biking, and weather permitting, cross country skiing. In the spring, the Fairfax Park Authority stocks the creek with trout for fishing.

After the First World War, a dam was built, forming Lake Accotink. When it was no longer needed for an Army Camp, the park authority purchased it and transformed the lake into a popular recreational attraction for boating, fishing, hiking and biking.

Annandale Schools: Public and Private

An extremely family friendly area, the Annandale real estate market is also part of one of the greatest public school systems in all 50states. The Fairfax County school system has an amazing reputation. In fact, 90 percent of its graduates go on to secondary education. In addition, it is also the location of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, which is rated the third best school in the country and first in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
