The History of Vienna, VA

The history of Vienna itself (non-native settlement that is) began in approximately 1740. The Fairfax County Courthouse is most likely one of the first structures of the European Settlement. Soon afterwards, roadways were built, such as the Old Courthouse Road and Lawyers Road, which are still in existence today.

Colonel Charles Broadwater, a colonial soldier, who built his residence in the 1750’s, owned much of the land that became Vienna. By the 1960’s, Mr. Broadwater’s daughter married John Hunter of Scotland, who became the area’s principal landowner. Originally from Ayr County, Scotland, Hunter renamed his land Ayr Hill, a name that remained for a century.

In the mid-1800’s, settlers tired of the northern winters migrated south to enjoy Virginia’s temperate climate and attractive land prices. William Hendrick, a wealthy resident from Vienna, New York, moved to the region and purchased much of the available land. He renamed Ayr Hill to Vienna in recognition of his roots up north.

Vienna’s turn to take part in history came with the railroad in 1859. Soon afterwards, it played another part during the Civil War as an alternate campground for both sides of the conflict. Many families moved away from Vienna because it was difficult to know the difference between friend and foe, north and south. After the war, a second influx of northerners repeated a migration, making Vienna their home for the climate, fertile soil, and close proximity to the nation’s capital.

Interestingly enough, Vienna remained a small rural town for quite some time. In 1940 the population exceeded 1,200 people. World War II brought even more people to Northern Virginia, with approximately 10,000 people moving to Vienna. Despite suburban influences, Vienna has maintained a small-town existence.
