History of Reston, VA
Reston was originally owned by Lord Fairfax during the 1800’s. Later, C.A. Wiehle purchased the land. After a few buildings were constructed, his sons inherited and then sold the land to A. Smith Bowman, who built a distillery there.
In 1960, Robert A. Simon bought all the remaining acreage except for the 60 acres that was home to the distillery; the distillery continued its operations until 1987. Reston as a planned community was the brainchild of Simon; the name Reston logically originated using Simon’s initials.
Lake Anne was the first part of the official Reston community and was designed with modern architectural elements in mind. All businesses located in Lake Anne are local; to this day there are no chain stores or chain restaurants allowed. Other neighborhoods followed, each with their own shopping center and supermarket.
As part of the New Town movement, Reston was architected and developed to preserve a wonderful quality of life. People can live, work, and play in their own community with common grounds and equality regardless of income level.
Things To Do in Reston
Because Reston was designed to fulfill all parts of one’s life, there is plenty to do within the town itself. A few of Reston Town Center’s annual events include:
- Reston Festival
- Farmer’s Market
- Thanksgiving Parade
- Relay for Life
- Reston Triathlon
During summer, free concerts are offered at the Lake Anne Plaza and the Reston Town Center. In addition, many take to the water and rent canoes, paddleboats, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and more on Lake Anne.
