Staunton Virginia: Where You Will Find Your Perfect Historic Home for Sale

The historic town of Staunton, Virginia was established in 1761. With the arrival of the Virginia Central Railroad in 1854, Staunton became the center of transportation in the area and a supply base during the Civil War. If you love historic towns, then you should be looking for a historic home for sale in Staunton, Virginia. Although history can be found around every corner in this charming town, below are five historic neighborhoods that you must check out.

Newtown

The Newtown area of Staunton is the largest and oldest historic residential neighborhood in town. If you are hoping to find the perfect historic home for sale you will definitely want to begin your search here. The neighborhood is home to a variety of architectural styles including Federal, Colonial Revival, Victorian and Gothic Revival. The homes in this area date from the 1800s to the early 1900s. Newtown is within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, the public library and parks.

Beverley District

The Beverley District is the downtown hub of Staunton, Virginia and the majority of buildings date from the 1870s to the 1920s. Take a day and explore this delightful neighborhood on foot. If your new home is located here, you will be in the middle of everything. Some notable sites are The Clocktower which was built in 1916 and many of the components of the clock still work. The building now houses the Clocktower Eats and Sweets as well as the Tempest Bar and Lounge. The Beverley Cigar Store is located in a Romanesque Revival style building whose entrance is located interestingly enough in the corner of the building. Finally check out the Hotel 24 South located on Market Street. It was built in the Colonial Revival style and is Staunton’s tallest building. Although the hotel has recently been remodeled, it has retained its chandeliers, marble floors and a working Wurlitzer organ still maintains its place on the mezzanine.

Gospel Hill

The name Gospel Hill comes from the fact that religious meetings were held in the late 1790s at Sampson Eagon’s blacksmith shop located here at the corner of Beverley and Coalter Street. The elegant neighborhood is full of gorgeous homes built from 1870 – 1920 in a variety of architectural styles from Italianate to Colonial Revival. Be sure to spend time at Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace located at 20 N. Colton Street. Built in 1846, this home is a 12 room Greek-Revival style house built by the First Presbyterian Church as their minister’s home. Wilson was born in the home on December 28, 1856. Be sure to take a stroll down the beautiful tree lined street to 654 Beverley Street to see the only exposed log structure remaining in Staunton. The two room log home was built in 1869 with an original wood shake roof which was later replaced with tin.

Stuart Addition Historic District

This neighborhood is named after a wealthy and influential resident who gave the area to the city of Staunton in 1803. The Mary Baldwin University Campus calls this neighborhood home. Located on Augusta Street, this Gothic Revival style church, St. Francis of Assisi, was built in 1895 replacing the original 1851 Catholic Church. Further down the street you will find the home of Frazier Associates Architects. This building was built around 1800 and served as a stagecoach stop. The exterior was originally exposed log but has since been covered by hand-hewn clapboards. There is a strong African-American history in Staunton and the 400 – 600 N. Augusta Street’s buildings are important to this heritage. They include the Ebenezer Baptist Church built in 1910, a hotel built around 1800 and T.J. Collins’ Mt. Zion Baptist Church built in 1904.

Wharf District

Begin your visit to this historic district at the home of the C & O Train Station which is the 3rd station built on this spot. This train station is unique because it was built in the Bungalow style. As business boomed with the arrival of the railroad a row of brick warehouses were built between 1870 and 1910. It is here where you would find farmers, grocers and wholesalers conducting their business. These buildings are now known as the Wharf Warehouses and house retail shops, offices and restaurants. Located next to the train depot is The American Hotel, a Greek Revival building built in 1855. The President and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant once stayed at this very hotel.

At every turn you will find that history surrounds you in Staunton, Virginia. If you love history and historic homes this is definitely the place for you. Spend some time in the area to find out which neighborhood you like the best and begin your search for historic homes for sale in Staunton to discover your own little piece of history.
