Shenandoah Valley Wineries and Shenandoah Valley Vineyards

The Shenandoah Valley is quickly becoming one of the most exciting wine producing regions in the country. The superior climates and higher elevations are the ideal conditions for producing a vibrant and thriving vineyard as well. The mounting reviews from both food and wine reviews have increasingly more people interested in what this Central Virginia region has to offer. As the accolades accumulate, Shenandoah Valley wines are becoming increasingly sought after, especially in restaurants and specialty wine shops. As an emerging leader in the East Coast winery scene, the Shenandoah Valley winery tourism has grown. The mountain vistas and scenery as well as the quaint towns and cities combined with the excellent terroir and climate make for the perfect wine region.

History of Shenandoah Valley Wineries & Vineyards

Shenandoah Valley is steeped in history and has many landmarks that date back all the way to the Civil War. The area was first settled in the 1600’s and by the 1800’s was nicknamed “the breadbasket” of the Confederacy. The 20th century was truly when the vineyards of the region began to mature and make up the beginnings of the Shenandoah Valley American Viticultural Area, commonly referred to as the Shenandoah Valley AVA.

The Shenandoah Valley AVA

The Shenandoah Valley AVA is bound by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Appalachian Plateau, and the Allegheny Plateau. Although the majority of the AVA is located along the western border of Virginia, a small portion can be found in West Virginia.

The climate is said to be humid, and in a subtropical/maritime/ continental region. Within the AVA the hardiness zone is mostly 6b, yet reaches 7a in some areas. There is a wide range of vinifera grown within the Shenandoah Valley, with the majority being Vitis labrusca, Vitis Vinifera and French Hybrid Grapes.
