Land Preservation

When it comes to land preservation in Virginia, no county takes it more seriously that Orange County. For example, in 2008, when Walmart Stores announced its plans to build an enormous Supercenter store less than one-quarter of a mile from Wilderness Run, a National Park and battlefield of the American Civil War, preservationists activated a campaign that prevented the mega retailer to change its mind. This move preserved the integrity of the battlefield, and Walmart built its Supercenter store in a different location.

Historic Attractions in Orange County, VA

Citizens and visitors appreciate the landmarks and historic homes in Orange County, Virginia. From President James Monroe’s Montpelier to the ruins of Governor Barbour’s mansion, people are drawn to our neck of the woods to get a glimpse of what life was like for our nation’s forefathers.

Historic train stations, stately manors, rustic cabins and botanical gardens all attract the attention of tourists and property buyers. Below, we list some of the more famous area attractions and Orange County historic homes.

  • President James Madison’s newly restored Montpelier and its 2,650-acre plantation estate are now the historic properties of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. For more information, visit www.montpelier.org. The nonprofit organization aims to inspire continuing public engagement with American constitutional self-government by bringing to life the home and contributions of James and Dolley Madison.
  • The Montpelier Train Depot, which is more than 100 years old, was recently renovated by the Montpelier Foundation to preserve the historical impact of racial segregation and the “Jim Crow” era.
  • The Civil War Museum at the Exchange Hotel in Gordonsville houses a stunning collection of uniforms, weapons, and medical care artifacts used during the Civil War. Surgical instruments used by Confederate medical staff, pharmaceutical bottles, medical knapsacks, stretchers, prosthetic devices, and dental tools are all on display at this museum. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is an African-American Memorial Site.
  • The ruin of Virginia Senator and Governor James Barbour’s mansion, which was destroyed after a Christmas Day Fire in 1884, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The ruin is preserved by the award-winning Barboursville Vineyards. This vineyard and winery has a wonderful restaurant and charming lodging options. The home was designed by President Thomas Jefferson and was at one time considered “the finest residence” in the county.
  • Ellwood Manor was also used as a hospital during the American Civil War and sits on top of a hill overlooking the Civil War battlefield Wilderness Run. In this location, armies led by Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant fought one another. Three different Union Army generals used the Orange County historic home as a headquarters, but it is widely recognized among students of history because the manor’s family cemetery is the burial place for Confederate General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson’s amputated arm.
