History of Loudoun County, Virginia

England’s King Charles II granted seven noblemen 5 million acres of land in 1649. The grant was formally known as the Northern Neck of Virginia Proprietary and later known as the Fairfax Proprietary, covered land between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers. Beginning in 1653, Westmoreland, Stafford, and Prince William Counties were formed from the grant during the course of 77 years. Twelve years later, in 1742, the remaining land was assigned to Fairfax County.

In 1757, Fairfax County was divided and its western section was renamed Loudon for the fourth Earl of Loudoun, John Campbell. This significant figure commanded British armed forces in North America served as titular governor of Virginia for a period of three years. Leesburg has always been the county seat of Loudoun County.

The first settlers of Loudon included people from out-of-state: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Settlers also came from eastern Virginia to grow tobacco plantations. Soon afterwards, Quakers, Germans, Irish, and Scots-Irish immigrants moved into Loudoun west of the Catoctin Mountains. Additional people displaced by French and Indian War moved from the Shenandoah Valley to the western region of Loudoun, near Short Hill.

Loudoun County Today

Today, Loudoun County is an expansive region with more than 361,000 residents. The region offers scenic countryside and a metropolitan lifestyle with access to a strong job market, entrepreneurial activity, established neighborhoods, and high quality education and public services.

Loudoun County real estate is an excellent investment. The Ashburg/Sterling/Leesburg corridor realized appreciations of more than 10 percent, year over year, thanks to the growing tech sector.

Loudon County Public Schools

Thanks to rapid population growth from tech jobs, Loudon County Public Schools have gone through an expansion that makes it the fastest growing school district in Virginia and the third fastest growing school system in the United States.

With more than 70,000 students, Loudon County has done an exemplary job of bolstering the quality of its school systems. Based in Leesburg, the C.S. Monroe Technology Center is a technical school for high school students and graduates. The Douglass School, also in Leesburg, is an alternative education center. Loudoun Academy of Science, specializing in science and mathematics, arms students extra knowledge for higher education.

Parks and Recreation

Loudon County is the home of the Franklin Park Performing and Visual Arts Center. The center accommodates 263 seats in a timber-framed structure. Opened in 2008, the center hosts an array of artists across many disciplines.

Loudon County hosts historic and cultural sites.

The Loudon County Park Service contains seven parks that range from nature preserves with majestic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to athletic facilities with soccer fields and lighted softball fields.
