History of Herndon, Virginia

Named and officially in 1858 after Commander William Lewis Herndon, a man who captained the SS Central America that went down with him aboard in 1857, Herndon offered a moderate climate, inexpensive land, and Native Americans who were welcoming and responsive to trade. The area remained rural for quite some time, housing mainly dairy farms and a vacation spot for the nearby residents of Washington, DC.

The railroad was eventually transforming into a trail for hiking and bicycling, and the town was quick to capitalize on the fact that it maintained a small town feel and quaint history despite its nearness to the major metropolitan area developing in and around Washington DC. It utilized it’s train station and transformed it into a museum and visitors center. They even had a caboose brought over from Norfolk, and together with the station they have become iconic symbols of Herndon. Tourists and residents visit this symbolic downtown area on a daily basis, and Herndon’s historic charm is indeed something the residents’ value and wish to preserve.
